Te Whatu Ora Waikato Molecular Laboratory

Te Whatu Ora Waikato faced rapidly growing testing demand, driven by advances in molecular biology and emerging health challenges. Increasing pressure on the ageing laboratory facility at Waikato Hospital highlighted the need for a major upgrade to support modern diagnostic capability.

The upgrade modernised the laboratory by co-locating Molecular Biology services on the main floor and reconfiguring support spaces to create a fit-for-purpose environment equipped with the latest technology. Four air lobbies were introduced at key laboratory entrances, ensuring compliance with current accreditation standards and improving resilience for future outbreaks.

Works were carefully staged to allow the laboratory to remain fully operational throughout construction. Upgrades were also carried out to reception, administration, and staff facilities, while a new Point of Care Testing Laboratory enabled clinical specimens to be analysed closer to the patient.

Kingstons provided cost management services from early design through to laboratory commissioning, supporting delivery across all stages.

This upgrade provides a modern, resilient laboratory environment, supporting advanced diagnostic services for the Waikato region.
